Governor Douglas Hosts First Governor's Leadership Summit on Out of School Time

Montpelier, Vt., May 24, 2004—Governor Jim Douglas and the Vermont Out-of-School Time Network hosted more than 220 Vermonters of all ages for the first Governor's Leadership Summit on Out of School Time, a statewide effort to improve student achievement through programs such as tutoring, mentoring, organized sports, art activities, community service, and other extra learning opportunities (ELOs).

The Governor convened a variety of state and local partners—ranging from church groups, community anti-drug coalitions, and the 4-H, to local teen centers, the Girl Scouts and youth sports officials—to craft an agenda for improving the quantity and quality of out of school time and extra learning activities in the state.

The day included a roundtable discussion with young Vermonters lead by the Governor and Lt. Governor (as seen in the photo), a policy-makers panel that included the commissioners of health, education, and public safety, speeches by out of school time experts, regional planning meetings, and a performance by the In Your Face Gorilla Theater.

Governor Douglas noted that this effort is a perfect compliment to other school improvement efforts, his Fit and Healthy Kids Initiative, and his DETER anti-drug program.

"Providing children with opportunities to learn outside of school helps them succeed," Governor Douglas said. "Extra learning opportunities also help kids stay active, out of trouble, and away from drugs by giving them fun and educational activities to participate in while they are out of school."
